Homework: Prepare for Division Quiz

Hi Students,

This is a friendly remind that you have a Division Quiz on: Thursday, June 11

On the quiz, you may be asked to: 

  • Represent a division equation using a picture

  • Write a division equation to match a given picture

  • Solve division equations up to 3-digit by 1-digit using strategies, such as "Drawing Groups", "Long Algorithm", or "Short Algorithm" 

  • Solve a division word problem in pictures, numbers, and words (a sentence answer)

  • Create a division word problem

  • Solve questions that include remainders

The "Drawing Groups" strategy

Since this strategy is unfamiliar to many parents, I am going to describe it here using the language we used in class: 

  1. Think about the problem. An example of what 48 / 4 means is that you have 48 of something, and you are sharing that out equally between 4 people.

  2. Draw circles or stick people to represent the number of the divisor (4).

  3. Use a number you can skip count by easily (like, 100, 10, 5, 2...). Share out the same amount to each person/group. For example, in the picture below, the student started by giving each person 3. 

  4. Calculate how many you just gave out in total (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12).

  5. Subtract 12 from your dividend to see how much you have left to give (48-12 = 36).

  6. Do steps 3 & 4 again until you have shared out all that you have. 

Count up how many you have in one of the groups. This is your quotient (answer). If you have any leftover, write that as your remainder (R = ___).

We have been working hard on our adding and subtracting skills. After the break, we will put those skills to the test on a quiz. The quiz will include calculations of 4 digit numbers in both operations and problem solving.

Multiplication Work


A Class Favourite: Multiplication Luck!

Over the past five weeks, we have been learning what Multiplication is, how to represent it, and how to solve problems related to it. While doing so, students have explored patterns in the Multiplication table and gained fluency when solving equations up to 12 x 12. We will now be moving on to Area, which reinforces an understanding of Multiplication arrays, and then larger Multiplication equations, up to 3-digit by 1-digit numbers.  

It is essential that students know their times tables up to 12 x 12. As we build on this foundation, the problems will increase in difficulty. If they cannot skip count yet, they need to practice at home. 

On Google Classroom, there are a plethora of resources for helping students. Some kids learn best by singing their times tables, some enjoy card or dice games. There is an interactive Multiplication Grid where students can highlight multiples of each number and colour-code them. In class this week, we started creating one more tool for helping: a "Multiplication House." 

Students chose the times table they most need to practice. They created their own design that has flaps, such as a school bus with windows that open, a pizza with pepperoni flaps, or a cell phone with swinging keys. On top of each flap, they wrote the factor they are multiplying by. Under each flap, they wrote the answer (the "product"). This is a tool students can use independently for practice. Stay tuned for more pictures next week of our finished product!

Reminder: Multiplication Quiz March 11

Hi Students,

This is a reminder that you have a Math Assessment for Multiplication coming up.

Quiz date: Wednesday, March 11


Here is what you are expected to know for the quiz, in case you'd like to review at home. You can use the resources on Google Classroom and re-read our class blog posts for help.


  • Represent Multiplication equations using pictures (ex: drawings of groups) and arrays (rows and columns)
  • Draw arrays to match a given total (ex: draw as many arrays as possible with a total of ___)
    • Explain how you know there aren't more possible arrays using clear Math language
  • Solve Multiplication equations up to 12 x 12
  • Explain strategies for each times table up to 12, using clear Math language (ex: There is a pattern in the ones place. Each digit in the ones place increases by one.)
  • Solve word problems relating to Multiplication by showing the answer as a picture, an equation, and a sentence answer
  • Create word problems that use Multiplication.

Intro to Multiplication


This week with Ms Elder, we started learning about Multiplication in Math. 

Multiplication means repeated addition. It is making groups and counting up the total. The two numbers you are multiplying are called the factors and the answer to a Multiplication equation is called the product. We can represent Multiplication by drawing pictures of groups or arrays


This week, Ms Elder put us into groups and assigned each group a times table. With our group members, we are responsible for making a poster that shows the strategies you can use to multiply by that number. We will also put patterns we see and a hundreds chart with the multiples highlighted. Here is an example we made together, with some tips to make a great poster:

By the end of Grade Four, we need to have memorized our multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. There are games and songs and ways to practice posted on the Google classroom.

HOMEWORK: Prepare for Number Quiz

Students, this is a friendly reminder that you have a Math Assessment on Wednesday, December 10. You will need to be able to: 
  • Count base ten blocks to 10 000 and give the numeral
  • Draw base ten blocks to 10 000 to match a given numeral
  • Order a set of numbers to 10 000 from least to greatest/greatest to least
  • Give the expanded form to match a numeral
  • Give the numeral to match an expanded form
  • Solve a "number riddle" using place value vocabulary
  • Write a numeral to match a number said out loud by the teacher

Mandala Writing



After drawing personal symbols to share who we are and what we like in our manadala art with Ms. Elder (not to mention learning about radial symmetry!), we then learned how to write a paragraph with Mrs. Jamroziak.

We did a rough draft on paper, typed them up, received feedback and worked to improve our topic sentence, supporting details and sentence structure!

Place Value



In Math these past few weeks with Ms Elder, we have been learning about the concept of Number. We have been practicing place value and Number vocabulary by: building numbers with Base Ten blocks, playing Place Value games, and doing Number Riddles.

Here are a few games we can play at home to practice:

Number Riddles

Materials: whiteboard (optional)

Instructions: 

1) One person thinks of a number (we practiced 3-digit).

2) Player 2 asks questions to get clues. Use Place Value vocabulary like: greater than, less than, odd, even, the digit in the ones/tens/hundreds place...

3) Player 1 tells them when they guess it right!


Trading Places

Materials: one set of dominoes, mat (optional)

Instructions: 

1) Flip all the dominoes upside down and shuffle.

2) Player 1 picks a domino. Choose which Place Value column you want to put that number in. Once your domino is placed, it cannot be moved.

3) Player 2 picks a domino. Repeat.

4) Player 1 picks a domino. They choose which way to put it in the Place Value columns that are left.

5) Player 2 picks a domino. Repeat.

6) Whomever has the greater number wins! You must be able to read your number out loud.

Place Value Race

Materials: one deck of cards

Instructions: 

1) Play with 2 players. Remove the 10's, Jack's, Queen's, and Kings, and Jokers. Shuffle.

2) Each player flips 2 cards over at the same time.

3) The first person to say the number out loud correctly keeps the cards. When you're finished the stack, the person with the most cards wins!


Banker's Game

Materials: one set of Base Ten blocks (could be printed or use coins), 2 dice of different colours, 1 place value mat (optional)

Instructions: 

1) Decide which colour of dice are for which place value column.

2) Player 1 rolls 2 dice. They collect the Base Ten blocks of that number.

3) Player 2 repeats.

4) Regroup when you can!

5) The first person to get to 100, wins!

Reminder: Graphing Quiz on Oct 9

Students, this is a friendly reminder that you have a Graphing Assessment on Thursday, October 9. You will need to be able to: 
  • Create a Bar Graph with a scale of 2:1 or higher to represent a set of data
  • Accurately use the "Bar Graph Checklist" criteria used in class
  • Read and interpret both Pictographs and Bar Graphs

Collecting Data through Math Games

Today, Ms Elder taught us a game called Clockominoes. In this game, you draw a domino, add the dots together, and place the domino with that total on the arm of the clock. 

We calculated as a class what the smallest number of dominoes was that you'd need to win (12), and the greatest total you'd need to win (27). We started a chart to show who in our class was the luckiest (needed the fewest dominoes to win). Then, we played to collect the data!
